本书从准实土卫所和建置沿革入手，探讨明代卫所的行政区划制度。第一章以普遍统计，归纳沿海卫所的政区形态；第二章选三种现象，观察边地卫所的实土程度；第三章选四项疑难记载，考证建置沿革；结语则推论明代卫所乃至全体政区的基本模式。本书结论倾向于对史实的简单化理解：都司卫所为省府州县的辅助政区系统，建置沿革的复杂记载背后往往是简单史实，明代政区体系可以视为一个遵循直隶/分管模式的圈层结构。此外，本书草创一份明代方志工作目录，以裨读者。
